Themed after Zerzura, a mythical hidden oasis in the Sahara Desert, ZZURA is a moody, modern take on Middle Eastern architecture, designed by Nelson Chow and his team at NC Design & Architecture. Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed into what appears to be a traditional Bedouin tent before being led into the bar area. Inspired by the layout of a souk, the space is arranged around a central bar, with individual tables along the circumference of the room. ‘We looked at the maze-like structure of a market, where you have small lanes that lead to little pockets here and there,’ Chow explains. ‘We tried to adopt this aspect through the layout and seating typology.’

What makes the space unique is the effortless combination of contemporary flair with elements of traditional Middle Eastern architecture, cleverly achieved through evocative shapes and patterns, their heavier ornamentation stripped back to reveal the basic geometry. The result is an angular design tempered by curvy, ripple-like details on the ceiling above the bar. ‘We built the banquette seating and the bar as if they were an extension of each other and unified them with the same hand-painted cream plaster finish,’ Chow says. ‘This creates the warm and earthy vibe of Middle Eastern architecture, as well as a minimalist and modern interior that highlights shapes and forms.’

The speakeasy’s mood is further enhanced by details like the earthy colour palette, with hints of warm cyan and orange, and back-lit mesh screens that hug the edges of angular structures and cast a warm glow on individual booths. Armour-inspired lights and decorative elements on walls provide additional character, while tropical plants reinforce the oasis motif and bringing a sense of freshness. A minimalist water fountain carved into the wall at the entrance greets visitors and signals the bathroom, which echoes the same geometry as the rest of the bar but is rendered in futuristic polished metal.

While the Middle Eastern theme is far from new in the F&B space, thanks to its modern and refined design, ZZURA brings something fresh to the table — a contemporary expression of Middle Eastern elegance, delivered through a simple yet inventive design language.
