Hotel The Mitsui Opens in Kyoto
With interiors by acclaimed Hong Kong designer André Fu, Hotel the Mitsui is a contemporary interpretation of Kyoto’s history and heritage
Kyoto’s prominent Mitsui family have opened their storied family home to the public in the form of Hotel The Mitsui, located next to historic Nijō Castle. The serene interiors come courtesy of Hong Kong designer André Fu, whose eye for elegance and understated luxury is evident throughout the 161 rooms and suites. Guests enter through the restored 18th-century Kajiimiya Gate, while inside birch flooring and plush, low furnishings add to the pervading sense of tranquility. Dining options are Italian or Japanese teppan, headed by renowned chefs Shozo Sugano and Tetsuya Asano respectively, with the Garden Bar offering cocktails with a view throughout the year. Guests can retreat to the thermal hot spring or private onsen for a pre- or post-prandial soak.
