In this Taipei apartment, Horizontal Studio blends modern design principles with the building’s original architectural elements to create a layered, characterful home

Designer Saoyi Chien of Horizontal Studio first connected with the owners of this Taipei apartment when he was recommended by a mutual friend who vouched for the designer’s adeptness at merging historical elements with contemporary design. This sensibility resonated with the clients, a couple with a deep appreciation for architecture and design and who enjoy hosting social gatherings at home.

Their brief was clear: to create a harmonious space that married the historical with the modern. ‘They wanted to preserve and highlight certain original features, such as the old arched windows and structural columns, which are both functional supports and classical design elements, while incorporating modern design,’ Chien says. ‘They emphasised the need for a serene and inspiring environment, with particular attention to natural light and greenery.’

The materials, too, reflect that blend of old and new. In the kitchen, a wall of kiln-fired handmade tiles adds texture and colour, as does the bathroom’s tiled curve. The timber flooring and furniture are the perfect background for objets, plants and other collectibles. ‘We selected artwork that adds character and a personal touch to each room,’ the designer explains. ‘Sculptures and decorative items reflect the emphasis on nature and tranquillity.’

In the bedroom, custom rattan screens create visual interest in the minimal space, with the paper lanterns echoing the curves of the windows. ‘I enjoy how the home seamlessly blends comfort and tranquillity,’ Chien notes. ‘The preservation of the old architectural elements not only adds historical depth but also creates a serene ambience.’
