Calm on the Horizon

Design Anthology: How did you first meet the client, and can you tell us about them and their lifestyle?

YC Chen: The clients found us through our website. They’re a couple — one works in finance, the other is a yoga instructor — with a three-year-old son, and they both lead busy professional lives. Their family members come to stay from time to time, so they wanted a home that reflects all of these aspects.

What was their brief to you for the project?

They didn’t actually have a strict brief in mind. They knew they wanted to keep it contemporary and that the design should include a multifunctional room for yoga and guest sleepovers, as well as a study and enough storage space.

What is the overall size of the house?

The 335-square-metre, four-bedroom home is located in a building high up on the mountain, with unobstructed panoramic views of the coast. The building is west facing, which means the family can enjoy watching the sunset every day.

How did you approach the project — what design references did you try to incorporate into the space?

We wanted to give the home a timeless look, so we incorporated light mid-century modern references, and played with arches and curves in some areas, like the glass partition s and cabinets.

Please tell us a little about the material choices for the space.

Stone tiles feature in the living room, while for the kitchen we chose hardy terrazzo. On the second level, where the private spaces are, we selected wooden flooring and painted the walls in various colours, with wallpaper in the master bedroom.

Do you have a favourite element or design detail in the architecture or interiors?

We actually have a few! One of them in the low cabinet, with the brass quarter-circle handle, another is the arched metal frame of the glass partition, and lastly the master bathroom’s jacuzzi and shower room.
