A Studio for the Body and Mind
Designed by Studio Kanta, Stretch & Flow is a yoga studio and clinic where light, earthy hues and natural textures create a sense of respite for body and mind. Here studio principal Adrien Kent tells us more about the project
Design Anthology: How did you first meet the client?
Adrien Kent: The client reached out to me via email. She visited one of the stores we designed, FERN in Bangsar, and got my contact information from them.
What was her brief to you for the project?
The brief was to combine two brands — The Flow Studio and The Stretch Clinic — in one space. To combine them, the client created a new brand called Stretch & Flow, with a new brand identity that had to be reflected in the studio’s interior design.
Where is the studio?
The 230-square-metre studio is located at The Five in Damansara Heights, a suburb on the western side of Kuala Lumpur. It’s a central location that’s close to a train station. The building was refurbished and houses several interesting brands such as supermarket Qra, and cafe Feeling +.
How did you approach the project — what design references or narrative did you try to incorporate into the space?
We wanted to make it organic, minimal and serene for the yogis, but still professional enough for the physio clientele. We wanted to elevate the existing brands’ original spaces and make them cohesive.
The space is quite tonal in an earthy and light ecru, with walls in a lime wash and white oak veneer joinery. Linen curtains envelope the space, adding some softness.
Please tell us about some of the custom pieces for the space.
The reception counter is clad in white terrazzo with reclaimed timber, and the feature sink is made from white cement. But our favourite element is the custom copper water tap, which echoes the brand’s logo.
