Soho House Opens in Hong Kong

The private members’ club’s second location in Asia features characteristically stylish yet residential interiors that reference the city’s unique culture  

Following much anticipation, the Hong Kong outpost of private members club Soho House officially opened its doors this September. Geared towards creatives, Soho House was founded in London in 1995 by CEO Nick Jones with the mission of ‘creating a comfortable home from home for its members’. Since then, the brand has expanded across Europe and North America, with Soho House Hong Kong being its 25th location in the world and second location in Asia, following the opening of Soho House Mumbai in 2018. 

The opening might have been slightly delayed — loosely slated for March, then June — but the project itself was years in the making. Part of the challenge was finding a suitable property; the location finally selected for the club is a 30-storey former office building along Des Voeux Road West in Sheung Wan, with over 11,000 square metres of space and views of Victoria Peak, Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island. 

Following Soho House’s design ethos of keeping context in mind, Soho House Hong Kong is inspired by the city and its culture, with each area characterised by a distinct design identity. In the Pool Room, for instance, plenty of greenery and rattan furniture create a tropical feel, while the Brasserie on the 28th floor features a darker palette with rich leather seats and reclaimed wooden floors. 

‘Old Hong Kong glamour was the starting point for the design inspiration,’ explains Severine Lammoglia, lead designer at Soho House. ‘We also took inspiration from the view and the colours of the Hong Kong skyline, like the emerald greens and pastel tones found in the Pool Room.’ The interiors blend an English style with Asian influences, from woven basket patterns on the ceiling and high-gloss lacquer in the private dining room to the integration of local materials like bamboo. As with other clubs, Soho House Hong Kong also features the work of local artisans — artist Mariane Chan created the club’s pottery, while designer Timothy Wong is behind the indoor landscaping. 

‘It was important to us to create a space that members couldn’t find anywhere else in Hong Kong,’ Lammoglia says. ‘What we also endeavour to achieve in all our houses is the sense that you’re coming into a space that has been there forever, so you instantly get a homey feeling.’
