The Sensory Retreat Series
Experience Nº1 Tokyo
6–9 November 2025
Introducing The Sensory Retreat Series by Design Anthology and Aesop, a trilogy of journeys made for the curious traveller. These immersive experiences invite a small group of guests to experience Taipei, Hong Kong or Tokyo through architecture, design, craft, culture and dining.
A city of contrasts and constant reinvention, Tokyo rewards curiosity and close attention. This retreat offers a sensorial experience of the city, from the hushed focus of a calligraphy studio and the tactility of a handmade sake glass to memorable moments dining with new friends. Guests will stay at the Mandarin Oriental, a fitting vantage point for a city that rewards both elevation and immersion.
About the Series
Hosted by Design Anthology’s editors and Aesop’s local custodians, the Sensory Retreat Series favours intimacy, creating space for both pause and pleasure. Days will unfold in the company of artisans, makers and thinkers; over meals with those shaping the cultural landscape; and within spaces that reward a slower pace. At the heart of each journey lies a belief that thoughtful travel sharpens awareness and appreciation — a sense that lingers long after returning home.
Our partners at Aesop approach each endeavour with a quiet dedication to design that endures and is, much like the brand itself, thoughtful, intelligent and deeply attuned to the human experience. Aesop’s spaces are conceived as sensorial sanctuaries, offering moments of calm amid the noise of the outside world. Involving leading architects, designers and makers, The Sensory Retreat Series offers privileged insight into this world, with guests invited to see, touch, smell, hear and taste the design process and hear directly from the architects and designers who shape Aesop’s environments.
Every detail of the itinerary, from where we stay, eat and drink, to the cultural and craft encounters woven through each city, has been curated with care and purpose. On select occasions, guests will have access to spaces and experiences not usually open to the public. Each retreat is an opportunity to share meaningful conversations with like-minded aesthetes who seek discernment and the quiet luxury of respite.
We are extending this invitation to a small number of guests: Design Anthology members and readers, and loyal supporters of Aesop. Whether you are a longtime reader, a devoted patron or simply a curious traveller, we invite you to express your interest via our application form.
We look forward to welcoming you.

Our trips are curated by editors and creatives with a deep understanding of design, architecture, and culture. Each itinerary is built around exclusive studio visits, private collection tours, and encounters with designers and tastemakers you won’t find in a typical guidebook.
-
Our experiences are ideal for design professionals, collectors, and culturally curious travellers who value thoughtful curation, access, and intimacy over mass tourism.
-
We keep our groups intentionally small—usually no more than 12 participants—to allow for deeper conversations, access to private spaces, and a more personal experience throughout.
-
Pricing typically includes accommodation, all scheduled activities, most meals, and on-the-ground transportation. Airfare and personal expenses are not included. A detailed list of inclusions and exclusions will be provided before you book.
-
Yes. While the days are thoughtfully planned, we always include downtime so you can explore at your own pace or simply unwind.
