Championing Craft with Moire Rugs
Since its founding in 2018, Jakarta-based Moire Rugs has become a hub of creativity and textile production. CEO Tama Florentina, who studied in New Zealand and came to design through jewellery, established Moire after she spent time searching for a carpet that would embody her unique taste as a homeowner
Moire Rugs’ core philosophies stem from a desire to create high-end and high-design products that resonate in a deeply personal way, with excellence in every stitch. Using a distinctive hand-tufting technique, Moire’s artisans have honed their expertise in producing an extensive variety of designs, colours and textural qualities. They also use embossing and carving gradation techniques to bring a unique dimension to the rugs.
Made from an array of materials, each Moire carpet tells its own story. Wool, acrylic yarn, viscose yarn and bamboo silk each bear distinct qualities and when combined, ensure durability and longevity.
But the brand strives to do more than just create fine flooring — it wants to help tell the story of Indonesian craft and design. The carpets illustrate the cultural heritage, rich artistic traditions and craft for which Indonesia is renowned. As the only Indonesian carpet manufacturer with fully autonomous end-to-end capabilities, Moire distributes its innovative range of rugs across Asia. The results of collaborations with local and international creative leaders across disciplines, Moire’s carpets have become highly collectible.
In 2022, Moire was in the spotlight when it produced a series of rugs to mark Indonesia’s G20 Presidency. The brand designed 11 bespoke hand-tufted carpets to welcome state leaders at Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma Airport for the summit. Other Moire collaborations have seen its rugs appear in museums, in premium retail environments and at exhibitions. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of its parent company Hesitada Group next year, Moire will collaborate with ten brands and designers to create a new collection.
While carpets are a key component of many interior design projects, the ability to translate visual arts typically found on walls and other textile surfaces into flooring presents limitless opportunity. A Moire rug captures the essence of painterly strokes or meandering lines, executed with the skill of the craftspeople who work in the brand’s design studio and on its production floor. Straddling design, art and craft and spanning the abstract, traditional and contemporary, each rug is woven with skill and a story, making it a singular addition to any space.
