Into the Blue
In designing this apartment in Hong Kong’s coastal area of Pok Fu Lam, hoo founder YC Chen emphasised the client’s favourite colour to create a home that reflects her taste, with a mid-century modern touch
Design Anthology: Can you tell us about the client — who are they and how did you first meet?
YC Chen: The client found us online and she really liked our style. She lives with her partner and their pets
What was her brief to you for the project?
She really likes the colour blue, so we took this as the primary colour scheme. She also wanted a big bathroom with a standalone bathtub.
What’s unique about the building and the location?
The 70-square-metre apartment faces the sea, so it’s quite bright and calming.
How did you approach the project — what design references did you try to incorporate into the space?
We wanted to create a modern classic space that celebrates her favourite colour, with a mid-century modern touch.
Can you tell us more about your material and furniture?
We used French moulding on the ceiling, walls and cabinet doors, with touches of brass in the trimming and handles, and some retro-looking decorative lamps. We selected dark wood for the flooring to create a more mature look. Almost all of the built-in cabinets were custom built using beige and dark wood veneers. We chose brass and crystal handles to give the pieces a luxurious feel.
Do you have a favourite element?
We really love the kitchen — it’s modern and has a strong character, and the blue wall with moulding behind the television is also quite special.
