A Characterful Mumbai Home

Studio Nishita Kamdar brought this apartment to life with bold colours and eclectic furniture

Designed for a vibrant and fun-loving client who enjoys travelling and entertaining, this three-bedroom home reflects the family member’s personalities. Mumbai-based multidisciplinary design firm Studio Nishita Kamdar was called upon to create a space where the family could entertain friends but also retain their privacy. To meet this challenge, the design team created subtle partitions like the fluted glass wall where a solid brick wall once stood, and an eye-catching sliding door to replace the original kitchen walls. A custom-made terrazzo table separates the living area from the bar area, while the striking dining table is the focus of the living room. Created from a single 4-metre-long slab of teak wood, the surface sits upon a concrete column at one end.

Warm and calming tones pervade the home, though each room has an individual twist. Wood is a key material throughout, as seen in the wenge veneer- and pine-clad wall that runs from the dining area to the end of the passage. An abundance of bright colours gives the entire home a sense of energy and vibrancy.

The majority of the family’s furniture is custom-made, though there are also pieces by local Indian designers, like lighting by Gulmohar Lane in the living room, dining chairs by BARO, and the custom-made pink and green carpet by HummingHaus.
