On Vietnam’s picturesque island of Phú Quốc , Ho Chi Minh-based MIA Design Studio has created a collection of luscious, green holiday villas that are one with nature. Wyndham Garden Phú Quốc was inspired by traditional Vietnamese architecture and ways of living, as well as the island’s natural flora. ‘The key point in the design was creating open spaces that also maximise privacy — the simplicity of each only having a floor and roof fulfils both these needs,’ Truong Nguyen Quoc Trung, architect and concept team leader at MIA Design Studio, explains.

In keeping with local architecture traditions, the villas are located close to one another, and all boast their own large courtyards. The villas are separated into groups of five or seven units, which in turn creates a small hamlet with a shared yard, while narrow pathways wind between the villas to mimic rural alleyways and encourage interaction among residents.

Given that the villas don’t have a view out to the ocean, the surrounding nature is a visual highlight. The design team were inspired by tropical plants, and the spacious rooms and gardens are covered by curtain of greenery that hangs from the roof. Three-metre walls ensure privacy for each villa, and the absence of doors, together with the intelligent use of sliding doors, ensures a strong connection with the outdoors.
