Shishi-Iwa House Botanical Design Workshop Retreat

At Shishi-Iwa House this summer, explore the intersection of unconventional modern approach to floral design and the century-old Japanese art of ikebana flower arrangement.

Guided by the industry leading team of Bangkok- and Paris-based 'anti-disciplinary' floral design studio PHKA, participants will learn the art of creating harmonious interiors using locally sourced flowers and plants, discovering how everyday botanicals can positively transform architectural spaces.

Hosted over three nights and four days from July 20-23, the programme includes creative workshops, forest bathing walks, farm visits and an introductory session on the art of ikebana, offering insight into the spiritual depth of Japanese floral traditions.

Guests will stay at the award-winning SSH No.01 and SSH No.03, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects Shigeru Ban and Ryue Nishizawa. Beyond the workshop, guests will also enjoy the rich culture of Karuizawa, savouring seasonal cuisine, local sake and wine tastings and traditional experiences such as onsen bathing, shiatsu massage and tea ceremonies.

Spaces are limited to only 14 guests. The workshops will be conducted in English. Cost is all-inclusive of the workshop, botanical materials, accommodations, all meals, transportation, all additional activities in the SSH Programme, wellness and transfers from Karuizawa train station. Guests also have an option to stay for additional night at a special rate of 15% discount.
