Hong Kong Design Festival deTour’s 2023 Edition

The 2023 edition of deTour, PMQ’s annual design festival, celebrates craft and design innovation through the theme New Know How

This year’s edition of Hong Kong’s annual design festival, deTour — presented by PMQ and sponsored by Create Hong Kong (Create HK) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region — will take place from 24 November to 3 December 2023. Curated by Kay Chan Wan Ki, Chi-wing Lee, and STICKYLINE and led by curator-at-large Shin Wong, the festival’s highlights include large-scale installations and exhibitions, workshops, design talks, film screenings and guided tours. Joining from the Netherlands is Dutch creative studio Biobased Creations, which is known for its experimentations with natural materials. This year the studio will be showcasing its new installation, Craft by Nature, as part of the deTour festival.

The theme of this year’s festival is New Know How. The curators invited participants to rethink the values behind traditional crafts and how the spirit of craft, characterised by attentiveness, precision and a strong sense of human touch, can be applied in design to go beyond existing frameworks and generate new ideas and methodologies with new perspectives, knowledge and experience, which the curators term ‘new know-how’. This new know-how, they propose, will help shape the development of the design industry and lead to social and economic growth.
